Tools for Further education teachers

The pace of change over these past few days has been undeniably quick and scary. As the dust begins to settle we are beginning to adjust to working from home and maintaining the strict social distancing measures.

As an active practitioner of further education, self confessed geek and online content creator I have compiled a list of tools for remote learning. It is my hope and expectation that these tools can be used to good effect in the support of digital teaching and learning.

My recommended tools are as follows:

Lesson Planning

The 5E instructional model is of particular use when it comes to lesson planning.  This inquiry-based form of instruction aims to build curiosity and the inclination to learn.

If you’d like a free lesson based on the model then please share your email in the comments section below.

Lesson or Workshop Delivery:

You must decide upon the suitability of the synchronous, asynchronous, or hybrid delivery methods for any workshop that you are planning.

Synchronous learning will occur on a distant basis, with material delivered online or via another remote method.  Asynchronous learning will take place via online channels and does not rely on real-time interaction. Alternatively, you may opt for a hybrid combination of the two recommended learning models.

Options for remote workshop delivery include:

  • Edmodo
  • Microsoft Teams
  • Google Classrooms
  • Zoom
  • Google Hangouts
  • Skype
  • Explain Everything

Assessment & Feedback:

I have found the following assessment tools to be particularly helpful:

  • Wizer .me – suitable for the creation of worksheets, this tool can be used for Google classroom integration
  • Kahoot – this gamified tool is both interactive and easy to use.
  • Explain everything
  • Socrative
  • Formative
