Despite digital businesses demonstrating much faster growth than non-digital business, there is a staggering lack of diversity in the digital workforce.
According to the Tech Nation 2018 report, only 19% of of the digital tech workforce is female. In comparison to 49% women across all UK jobs
This is perhaps even more surprising as on average 28% of all UK digital tech workers are under 35 and therefore digital natives.
The government’s 2017 UK Digital Strategy set out the intention for the UK to be a world-leading and inclusive digital economy. The drive towards inclusion means ensuring everyone has access to the digital skills they need to fully participate in society.
However, it seems that many companies are failing to do their part. Based on telephone interviews with 2,700 adults who were selected from a UK representative sample of one million consumers aged 18 and older, only 6 per cent of this group received digital up- skilling in the workplace (Lloyds Bank, 2018, p 25).
